Stripped

STRIPPED
- description

With sculptures made of plywood, I examine the tension between consumption and organic life. I chose to use plywood, because it is a material, derived from a living tree whose soul has been stripped, glued, pressed into submission and cut into uniformity.  I use cut strips of this industrial material in a repeating pattern to create three-dimensional shapes that evoke fluid motion and life.  The pieces only approximate animate life, but can never realize it. They are, in fact impostors of the real thing.   My attempt to return a sense of nature, motion, grace and beauty to the material ironically further emphasizes that stripped of its organic life, there is no going back.
