INSTALLATIONS - MASS MoCA/Spectacle   2010. Discarded Theater Wood. Metal
- description

“Spectacle” is a site-specific installation presented as part of the MASS MoCA commissioned place-based performance, “The Intimacy of Spectacle” by choreographer Amelia Rudolph and the dance company Bandaloop. The performance explored the tension and connection between our affinity for human intimacy and the experience of spectacle. My sculptural installation was a giant hand-as-pointer that could freely rotate and swivel up and down, actuated by the whimsy of the wind. It was created using on-site discarded theatrical materials. Though pointer pointed randomly, its’ perceived authority easily drew in and focused the audience’s attention to whatever and wherever it pointed. As more audience members gathered, they were captivated by the directional stares of the others and followed along, hence the making of a spectacle.
